Bacteriostatic water is the liquid researchers use to reconstitute peptides in Uluwatu and bring a freeze-dried compound back into solution. It is ordinary water for injection with a small amount of benzyl alcohol added, which keeps bacteria from growing in the vial over repeated use. It is not the same as plain sterile water, and it is not the same as tap water, which should never go anywhere near a peptide vial.
The powder at the bottom of a peptide vial is delicate. Injecting water in fast, or aiming the needle straight at the powder, disturbs it more than it needs to be disturbed. The usual approach is to angle the needle so the water runs down the inside wall of the glass, landing beside the powder rather than directly on it, and to let gravity do the mixing.
Shaking introduces air and agitates the peptide structure itself, which can cause it to denature, the same way whisking an egg white changes its structure permanently. Once the water is in, a gentle swirl or a light roll between the palms is enough to bring the powder into solution. Patience does more here than force.
Most peptides go into solution clear, and a clear vial is the expected result once the powder has fully dissolved. Some compounds take longer to clear than others, and a light swirl over a minute or two usually finishes the job. A vial that stays cloudy well after that, or that develops cloudiness again later in storage, is a sign something has gone wrong and is not one to use.
Once a vial has been mixed, write the reconstitution date on it, either on the label itself or on a piece of tape. It is easy to lose track of which vial was mixed when, especially with more than one compound in the fridge at once, and the date is the one piece of information that cannot be recovered later by looking at the vial.
No. Tap water is not sterile and is not designed to keep a reconstituted peptide stable, so it should never be used. Bacteriostatic water is formulated for this and is the standard researchers use for mixing a freeze-dried vial.
A little cloudiness right after adding water is common while the powder is still dissolving, and a gentle swirl usually clears it within a minute or two. If a vial stays cloudy well after that, or turns cloudy again once it has been clear, do not use it and get in touch on WhatsApp.
Bacteriostatic water is designed for repeated use from the same vial, provided the stopper is swabbed with alcohol before every draw and a fresh needle is used each time. Good hygiene at each draw matters more than any fixed limit on how many times a vial is used.
